From the Streets to the Stage
22 February @ 7.30pm
Plucked from the streets and markets of Auckland city and performing on the stage of the atmospheric Galatos Ballroom.
An amazing line up of 5 largely unknown but world class musicians, an eclectic mix, each with their own life story to tell, from the homeless to the fortunate, from the educated to the self taught.
Kara Gordon: An incredible guitarist who busked his way to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA. He has played with Slash, Joe Satriani, Elton John, Black Sabbath and many other legends. Still busking the street on a sunny day in Auckland and playing gigs by night.
Dean Whaitiri: abandoned at birth, homeless at 15, Dean is a talented self taught saxophonist, who busked his way into the top Maori showbands of the 60’s and 70’s. Now a successful Auckland business owner, he hasn’t forgotten his roots and can still be found busking in Queen St and Takapuna market.
Wayne Hapi: the stand out star of the award winning NZ film, ” The Dark Horse”, as the gang patriarch. Wayne is an accomplished musician who spends much of his time assisting to help the homeless and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds rehabilitate into the community. If you are lucky you may catch Wayne busking in Auckland City CBD performing soulful numbers with his guitar.
Rewi McLay: as a teenager Rewi busked his bluesy soulful music on the streets in an effort to put food in his belly. Now a successful artist, model, a prolific song writer and lead singer/guitarists in bands Harvey Knows a Killer and the new Maori band Kiko. A strong supporter of Te Reo, an amazing musician.
Nick Jones: a jazz playing violinist who will wow the audience with his virtuoso performance. A multi-instrumentalist Nick can play any genre of music and can be found busking all over NZ.
